Azalea has taken all necessary precautions to ensure your system and data are secure.

Heartbleed has been prominent in the news recently, and the Azalea development and IT team has taken steps to address and squelch it. Our team has implemented fixes to ensure that no secure information has been compromised.

Heartbleed is a vulnerability in the technology used to encrypt information transmitted over the Internet. It targets a specific version of encryption or Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate.

The Internet bug Heartbleed has also shown up in the gadgets we use to connect to the Internet. Tech giants have identified about two dozen networking devices affected by Heartbleed. “That’s why this is being dubbed the biggest exploit of the last 12 years. It’s so big and encompassing,” said Sam Bowling, a senior infrastructure engineer at the web hosting servi ce Singlehop. Read more

Top Ten ICD-10 Codes for Christmas

Its the holiday season and while most are rushing around doing that last minute shopping and spreading good cheer, we, at Azalea, are getting ready for the exciting new things happening in our industry! One of these is the transition to ICD-10. So, in the spirit of the holidays, here is a short story with a couple of diagnoses that may come in handy to your practice this holiday season. See if you can figure out each code without referring to the cheat sheet at the bottom!

After weeks of running through the Y92.513 to get those final gifts, watching a few V00.212A at a local ice skating rink, and even a E916 when I was decorating the tree, it was finally the afternoon before Christmas and we were on our way to our holiday destination, Grandmother’s house. We all packed in the car tight and over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we went. In just a few short hours, we arrived at Grandmother’s house and were welcomed by cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and the smell of a great dinner cooking. After our arrival and before the Z63.1 began, we realized that we were missing one key person- Grandmother! Everyone scattered throughout the house and surrounding woods to look for her for fear that she had experienced a W00.9 or had another V09.1XXX with a reindeer-drawn sleigh. We looked high and low and finally found her wrapping some last minute gifts in the barn. We were so excited that broke out in holiday song, startling her and causing her to receive a minor W45.1 from the wrapping paper.

Happy that we found Grandmother, we all moved into the dining room and sat down to a delicious holiday feast! With all of the food displayed on the table it was easy for us all to R63.2. After dinner, though we were suffering from R46.4, we worked together to tidy up the dishes and kitchen. At the end of the night we watched the holiday fireworks and managed to avoid W39.XXA’s. After all was said and done it was a wonderful holiday event celebrated with loved ones, great food, and exciting events!

Mobility in Healthcare

Experts in the health IT industry say that mobile health has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by transforming the provider-patient relationship. With over 70% of modern physicians utilizing mobile technologies during their daily work routine, it is easy to see how that expert’s statement is accurate. Mobile health, often referred to as mHealth, offers numerous benefits to healthcare providers including reduced readmissions, an increased scope of patient care, decreased healthcare costs, increased access to care, and empowers the patient to manage their personal health.

Billing Tip: AMA CPT Code Enhancements to take Effect 1/1/14

The AMA released 335 code changes in a new CPT edition in September 2013. These updated codes aim to “capture and describe the latest scientific and technological advances in medical, surgical and diagnostic services” and are set to take full effect on January 1, 2014. New technological and scientific advancements that are now available to mainstream clinical practices have made it necessary to give the CPT code set a slight facelift. According to AMA President, Ardis Dee Hoven, M.D., the new code set will “fulfill its vital role as the health system’s common language for reporting contemporary medical procedures.”

A Practical Explanation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010

The Affordable Care Act requires all eligible Americans to be covered by health insurance. Simultaneously it provides a way for that to happen by providing incentives, penalties, and options to individuals, and small and large employers, including tax exempt employers. As of October 1, 2013, the ACT requires that people who do not have health insurance, regardless of reason, apply for health insurance coverage either through their employer, an insurance company, or through an exchange established by the Federal Government.

Mobility in the Healthcare Industry

Experts in the health IT industry say that mobile health has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by transforming the provider-patient relationship. With over 70% of modern physicians utilizing mobile technologies during their daily work routine, it is easy to see how that expert’s statement is accurate. Mobile health, often referred to as mHealth, offers numerous benefits to healthcare providers including reduced readmissions, an increased scope of patient care, decreased healthcare costs, increased access to care, and empowers the patient to manage their personal health.

Clinicians are taking advantage of the many mHealth initiatives that are on the market including: healthcare apps, telemedicine, and mobile healthcare devices. A mobile health device that is currently making a significant impact on the medical industry is Google Glass. Google Glass, an eyeglass without lenses type technology, allows the wearer to connect with other devices via Bluetooth and wifi and has already been implemented in surgery rooms across the globe. The hands-free device enables healthcare providers to view status updates, alerts, images, vital signs, and more by using simple voice commands, without the need to pause in the middle of a patient procedure. Other devices such as gluco phones and PMDs (patient monitoring devices) are also commonly used.

Telemedicine is another mhealth initiative that assists in increasing access to care, especially in rural locations. This technology connects physicians with patients using monitors and web cameras which enable healthcare providers to evaluate a patient’s health remotely. Additionally, telehealth technology is said to save the United States as much as $197 billion over the next 25 years.

The use of mobile health apps has become a widely-accepted practice throughout the medical community. Mobile health apps provide easy access to health information and education material on-the-go and are utilized in a variety of categories such as patient education, image analysis, healthcare professional training tools, interactive medical student education materials, surgery simulators, CPR training portal, a medical journal library resource, just to name a few.

Azalea Health understands the value of mobile technology and the positive and impactful role it plays in the healthcare industry. At Azalea, we place a high emphasis on the development of this technology and have already introduced several mHealth initiatives into our cloud-based product line. Our patient portal, Azalea PHR allows patients to securely and privately view their allergies, medication list, problem history, lab results, and prescriptions from the palm of their hand. Azalea also offers a mobile physician charge capture app, Azalea M. This app is seamlessly integrated with Azalea RCM, and enables providers to immediately send charges to billing staff from their mobile device. We also have big plans to continue to optimize Azalea systems for mobile use in order to best accommodate our customers.
