Medicare Telemedicine

Billing Codes Summary

With many clinics and health providers limiting in-office visits based on age and illness severity, large groups of patients are going underserved.

For those with chronic conditions and comorbidities, a missed preventative appointment could result in a preventable ED visit or inpatient stay.

To help address gaps in care, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has expanded access to Medicare telehealth services so that patients can receive care without having to travel to a healthcare facility.

This includes the new 1135 waiver under which Medicare can pay for office, hospital, or other visits delivered through telehealth services including those visits furnished in a patient’s home.

Starting March 6, 2020, and for the duration of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, Medicare will reimburse telehealth services and will consider these visits as the same as in-person visits.
