Billing Tips: NPI Deadline Comes and Goes
The NPI deadline has come and gone but keep in mind that several insurance payers still allow and/or require legacy information on claims. Stay abreast of the NPI requirements of your major payers. An easy way to do this is to go directly to the insurance company website. There is almost always a link on the main page for the latest NPI information specific to that payer. Also make sure to contact your electronic claims clearinghouse to find out what measures they have taken to ensure the proper data goes to the right payer. Keep in mind that in addition to having your physician and group NPI numbers on claims, there also needs to be NPI numbers for any referring physicians or for any facilities where services were rendered. For example: A group practice has a physician that also sees patients in a nearby nursing home. On the claim form there will be 3 different NPI numbers: The group NPI of the practice, the NPI of the provider who performed the service(s), and the NPI of the nursing home facility. An easy way to find and verify NPI information for individual and organizational providers is through the NPI registry at:
